Bunny jumped me at work.

Title: Mud ((yay title.))
'Verse: G1 Transformers
Characters: Skyfire. Smokescreen.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: TF cussing.

“You need a hand?”

Skyfire looked up from his attempt at scrubbing his wings, embarrassment warring with gratitude at the offer.

“Yes, if you’d be so kind.”

“No worries. I know how awkward some frames can be to clean on one’s own. Voice of experience here.” Doorwings flicked to illustrate his point, and Smokescreen gestured for the larger mech to sit down on the floor of the wash racks so he could reach the shuttle’s wings. Skyfire sat, rumbling softly with pleasure as the coat of mud he’d acquired was scoured away by the blue Datsun. The quiet was broken by the chevroned mech’s question.

“You were out helping with the landslide?”

Startled, the white mech fumbled before replying. “Hm? Oh, yes.”

“What did you do? Take a wallow?” Smokescreen raised an optic ridge as he worked chunks of dirt and rock (large ones, even for a Cybertronian) out of the flier’s frame. “There’s half a mountain caked onto you.”

Skyfire chuckled. “There was a second slide while I was there, a minor one. I got in its way.”

“And you didn’t just take off… why?”

“There were humans in its path. I was diverting the flow so that they had time to get clear.”

“Well, no wonder you’re so muddy. But it’s a good thing you were there then.”

“Probably.”

Both fell silent once more, Smokescreen concentrating on a particularly embedded stone, Skyfire contemplating the walls of the shower racks, recalling how another mech had once also helped him with this sort of thing. A wistful note escaped his vocaliser, sorrow-loss-loneliness, and he smiled sadly. The seeker dialect was such an expressive one, and he often found it more satisfying to give voice to his stronger emotions in that particular tongue.

Though Skyfire himself was not of the seeker-kind, Starscream had been teaching him the language… before. It helped pass the time when they were traveling between worlds, out in empty space, Starscream alternating between humming and chirring, sometimes even sounding like he was singing, and making fun of Skyfire’s ‘terrible accent’.

Lost in his reminiscence, the shuttle took some time to realise that Smokescreen had stopped scrubbing and was now back in front of him, expression half curious, half considering.

“Smokescreen? Is something wrong? Did I injure myself?” Strange, he didn’t sense any damage. The diversionary mech shook his head, then trilled at him, query-comfort. Skyfire stared, then rebooted his audios and replayed the memory data.

“How do you…”

“I should ask you the same question. You aren’t of seeker make.”

“… Neither are you.”

“I may be groundbound, but I’m still seeker-kin.”

Seeker-kin. Starscream had talked about them, briefly. Bots who had seeker programming, but not the distinctive jet based frames.

“… How?”

“Well, when one bot loves some other bot or bots very much…” The doorwinged mech smirked at him, and the shuttle laughed.

“Smokescreen!”

“Fine, fine. I’m from Praxus, Praxus was close to Vos, and the two cities mingled a lot. Seeker coding started to appear in the Praxian population and vice versa. Though the sparklings never developed flight capabilities, they got everything else, and my frametype was created to handle the combination. What about you? How did you learn seeker cant?”

“… Starscream.”

“I see.”

Skyfire’s expression had closed off, and Smokescreen patted his knee understandingly. “You don’t have to elaborate if you don’t want to. But I’d better tell you now, there are two more seeker-kin on the Ark.”

“Bluestreak… and Prowl?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh. But… Didn’t Praxus…”

“Yes. Some seekers didn’t like that the seeker-kin couldn’t fly. Saw it as a tainting of the lineage and wanted to get rid of it. They certainly achieved their goal. Me, Prowl and Bluestreak are probably the only ones left now.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Not your fault, Skyfire.”

The mech patted his knee again, then went back to cleaning the shuttle’s back. The flier shuttered his optics, slowly sorting through his thoughts.

“He was my best friend. Starscream. We’d been working together since the Science Academy.” Once he started, Skyfire couldn’t seem to stop himself, spilling his whole history with the now Decepticon Air Commander to Smokescreen, venting all his confusion, hurt and fear, even going so far as to admit, in a shamed whisper, that he still hoped the seeker and he could reconcile one day. Once the entire tale was finished, the smaller mech moved to hug him as best he could with the size difference between them, and Skyfire hugged back.

“I apologise. You didn’t have to hear all that.”

“You needed the release. And, if you haven’t forgotten, it’s kinda my job too. You’ve been bottling up, and it’s not good for you.” The Datsun murmured, and Skyfire found his expected anger at the manipulation… not occurring.

“I… guess I did. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Smokescreen hummed once more, reassurance-welcome-acceptance, and two more voices joined his. They turned to see a pair of mechs entering the wash racks, and Smokescreen could not help but exclaim when he saw them.

“Sweet Matrix, Bluestreak. How’d you manage to get even muddier than Skyfire?!” Turning to the black and white Datsun, the blue mech exclaimed again. “And why are you fragging spotless?”

Dryly, the gunner answered. “Only Primus knows. We tramped through the mudslide for hours, even Tracks and Sunstreaker are covered in mud, but there’s not a mark on Prowl. I swear he repels dirt. It runs screaming in the other direction when it spots him.”

Skyfire started to snicker, his mood lifting at their banter. Smokescreen smirked at them, then pointed at a free stall. “Go get cleaned up, then help me with Skyfire. I don’t want to be in here when Tracks and Sunstreaker arrive.”

The grey mech shuddered playfully, practically diving into the stall, and Prowl replied as he trailed after him, smiling faintly. “Primus forbid.”

Eee! The cute! *snuggles Bots* And whee! Seeker-cant! I love seeing that particular brain-child of mine in other peoples fics. XD Lovely job as always, hun. You write such wonderful Bots...

As for titles, may I suggest "wallowing"? It fits the fic and sounds like an omonomatapia for bird noises even when it isn't. XD

It's such a versatile thing, I can't write seekers without it popping up in headspace any more. And your seekers are wonderful too.

Thanks for the suggestion ^_^ (stupid bunnies. The way they keep biting, they should at least help with the titles...)

The Prowl-repels-dirt bit has me grinning like a demented idiot and giggling at random. Will there be more of this?

But ... but, it's not *logical* that Prowl should be spotless after tracking through a mudslide ... *fritz*

*crashes*

*reboots*

Darling story. Good thing for poor Skyfire that Smokescreen is a psychologist and Seekerkin. If anyone would understand, it would be Smokey. :D

Also, this line: “Well, when one bot loves some other bot or bots very much…” *falls over laughing*

*gigglefits over Prowl repelling dirt*

I'd ask you to write more but I don't see how this would continue... Looks like a one-shot to me ^^

Btw, *pokes Baby Boom bunny* when are you gonna give Sides a kick in the aft and comfort Warp?

I rather like the idea of Skyfire becoming friends with the Datsuns over his Seeker-cant abilities.
