Title: Of Wings and Flightless Mechs [Part 6 - End]
'Verse: G1 Transformers
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: TF cussing.

The three seekers were herded to an isolated corner of the makeshift camp, checked over and their injuries treated before being left under Smokescreen’s watch. Thundercracker glanced about, taking in his surroundings, gaze lingering on a small, light blue crystal lying on the ground.

“Where are we?” Smokescreen’s answer to his query was subdued and distant.

“The Crystal Gardens. What’s left of them.”

“Oh.”

He’d seen image captures of the famed display and had thought it beautiful, with its methane fog and floating crystals, like clouds and pieces of sky brought near the ground for the bots who couldn’t fly. He voiced the thought, and the chevroned mech looked away, stooping to pick up the crystal piece the blue seeker had spotted, turning the translucent fragment over in his hands.

“That was the intent. Just because we don’t, doesn’t mean we lose the desire to.”

Unable to think of anything to say to that, Thundercracker fell silent once more.

“Where’s Bluestreak? Is he alright? And Prowl?”

The blue seeker thanked Primus for Skywarp as Smokescreen shifted, breaking out of his mood and focusing on them once more.

“Bluestreak will be alright, thank you for your concern. The medics are seeing to him. Prowl is doing his job. S’one of the reasons I’m lead in our trine. He’s got enough on his shoulders without having to worry about us as a triad.”

“But, your trinemate is injured, and you are with us. How can he stand to be away?”

Skywarp’s question reminded Thundercracker of his own. “And Bluestreak couldn’t talk to you over the trine bond, why is that?”

“Because I’m a flightless seeker.” The diversionary tactician’s curt reply didn’t discourage their questioning looks, and he sighed, reluctantly continuing.

“It’s true that the flightless are sparked with different programming. We don’t have the same level of instinctive communication between wingmates, so even if they do, flightless trines don’t fly together as well as a skyborn trine would. When we trine, the connection isn’t as strong, or as clear. We get emotions, feelings, a very general sense of location, but we can’t exactly communicate in words. And sometimes, our trine bonds… dissolve… all on their own. We can re-establish them rapidly enough, but still…”

The fliers looked horrified, and Smokescreen couldn’t begin to articulate how thankful he was that their connection was still in place when he and Prowl had been looking for Bluestreak.

“But, if that’s… all,” And Thundercracker couldn’t believe he was describing what seemed like a devastatingly crippled trine bond in such a trivial manner, “why can’t you take seeker frames? You could still fly.”

He glanced at the yellow chevroned mech in front of him, looking troubled. “And the flightless were supposed to be glitched, fated without exception to go out early. Yet, here you are. Now I wonder how many were terminated before their time because their creators thought they’d not survive. The medical centres recommended it, even.”

Smokescreen hummed again, soothing as the seekers started to grow agitated once more. “It’s possible, there have been flightless bots who take on flight capable frames. We’re not flawed in that respect, if at all. We were meant to be like this. Our medics have gone over the coding a thousand times, there is nothing that shouldn’t be there, or that should be and isn’t. But the skyborn would deny all groundbound bots, flightless seeker or not, the sky. Why do you think there are so few flight capable non-seekers?”

Realisation dawned on the jets, and Thundercracker asked again. “… But, why does flightless programming have to differ there, if everything else is the same?”

There was another shrug of sensor panels. “Fragged if I know. That’s a question I’m thinking only Primus would truly be able to answer. And dunno ‘bout you, but I’m not to keen on getting into a position where I can ask.”

“Then answer this. How does your trine stay so fragging stable? Is Prowl exerting some kind of influence over the bond? And what is he, a drone? No bot could be as calm as he is.” The tactician stared at Starscream, who was pacing back and forth, sounding vexed at what he didn’t understand. The flier stopped, then spoke again, tone blunt.

“Bluestreak was pinned and hurt and your home city is in ruins. If I were in your place, I’d be catatonic, or worse. Any of the skyborn would be. Frag, having my first trine arguing with me sent me off the edge. Enough to quit the ‘Cons and attack them on the spot, not exactly the most well thought out of plans.”

“Starscream, what if the flightless were meant to be less trine focused?” The seekers turned to look at Skywarp, the teleporter’s expression lost in thought. “Skyborn trines are so closely bound, and we’re already sparked to be volatile, anything could set all three off at the same time. But the flightless… If their connections are weaker, then it stands to reason that they’re less affected by each other, and have more control.”

“Are you saying the flightless were meant to balance us?”

“… Maybe. My creator constantly told me that a roost, no matter how lofty, needed a stable base. Used to think they wanted me to keep my wandering CPU in check. Guess it could have meant something more.”

“We have no proof of that. And no way to find out.”

Thundercracker spoke up, sounding pensive. “I don’t know, Starscream. When Smokescreen took hold of my arm, I stopped freaking out immediately. And you two followed suit once he started with the seeker notes.”

The dark faced seeker frowned, then turned to the blue Autobot. “Smokescreen? Did you… feel anything when you calmed us?”

The doorwinged mech was looking at his hand, the one he’d grabbed Thundercracker with earlier, expression contemplative.

“… Like something I didn’t realise was missing was finally in place. Perhaps, just as the skyborn need the flightless to ground them, we need them in return.”

= = =

Starscream sighed, staring up at the sky. Skywarp leant against him, Thundercracker curled up alongside, helm in the teleporter’s lap, both in recharge, his trinemates at last. That they even got to have something other than a rushed, perfunctory binding in whatever corner was most expedient was a blessing.

Bluestreak had managed to get them some privacy while they visited him (everyone else had been chased away by this rather intimidating medic once the grey mech had started to look fatigued), and with the Autobot flightless standing watch for them, they’d trined.

The process had been a silent one (none of them felt like broadcasting something like this to the entire camp), the ritual sayings discarded in favour of the silent language of wing movements, conveying what was truly important in the ceremony. They were a trine, sworn to each other, one unit until they rejoined the Matrix.

They’d clutched at each other like their lives depended on it, concealing the gesture by gathering around Bluestreak’s medical berth. The gunner had smiled sadly at the jets, laying his hands over their joined ones, softly humming the traditional welcome that fledged seekers (who would have been invited to the rite under normal circumstances) gave to the newly formed trine, an offer of protection and guidance. The three fliers had been stunned, especially when Smokescreen had joined in, followed by Prowl, not expecting the groundbound seekers to do so.

“Wingkin, skyborn.” Smokescreen had reminded them. “In this, you are ours to watch over.”

The seeker rested his helm against the wall, being careful not to jar either member of his new trine, then startled when a black and white form materialised at the edge of his visual field.

“Frag, you need to weld a slagging bell to yourself. How can a bot run so quiet?”

Prowl didn’t respond to his words, only crouching to be level with the seated flier. Tilting his helm at the two other seekers, he spoke. “You should be in recharge as well.”

“Can’t. Need to keep watch for ‘Warp and TC.”

“You are safe here. High Command has accepted your story. What truly worries you?”

Starscream frowned. “I’m wondering why you and your trine hid your backgrounds. Now, with the war on and nearly every one of the skyborn enlisting with Megatron, it makes sense to keep it a secret. The Autobots don’t need the instability finding out the fragging SIC and another highly placed tactician were also seeker-sparked would cause. And Bluestreak doesn’t need the backlash that might be directed at him. He’s not as protected from it as you are. But if we’d known you were wing kin before the war… And Praxus, by the Matrix.”

“Knowing did not stop your former wingmates.” Sensor panels swept back and forth in a neutral manner, and the flier huffed, conceding the tactician’s point.

“I suppose so. But why should you have had to hide in the first place? It’s fragging obvious that we’re so much calmer around Smokescreen. And the flightless benefit from exposure to us too. Smokescreen’s settled the most, maybe cos’ he and we are both seekers, but I’ve seen Bluestreak with those frontliner twins, and you with the Ops division.”

“I’m a tactician. We do rely greatly on the Special Ops bots.” The chevroned mech smiled faintly as he made his reply, sounding perfectly innocent. Starscream snorted.

“Yeah. I have optics, Prowl. You flightless unconsciously seek out impulsive sparks like those of the skyborn. Anyway. The skyborn must have noticed that the flightless were good for them, no matter how biased their thoughts on grounded bots are. So why would anyone pinion us like that?”

The seeker looked away, trying to control his agitation, and the tactician let him collect himself, engine subtly droning in a calming manner. Starscream nodded in thanks, then continued.

“If Skywarp’s hypothesis is true, and your kind helps to settle mine, then I can only say that it’s because someone wanted us susceptible to their influence, and it annoys me that some fragger would mess with the seekers for their own ends.”

“You are certain of that, Starscream? It sounds like a conspiracy theory.”

“You get used to constantly thinking about underlying motives as a Decepticon. Nothing’s done for nothing, and tetchy, unstable bots are easier to manipulate.”

“I see.”

“In any case, I’m glad you dropped by, even if you’re too fragging quiet.” The Autobot SIC made a querying sound, and Starscream hesitated briefly. “I wanted to ask… Can we enlist with the Autobots?”

“Why?” Prowl’s surprise was evident, and the seeker glanced down at his hands.

“… So we can show them not all seekers are like the ones with the ‘Cons. And maybe one orn, you three can openly claim seeker sparks too.”

The chevroned mech only looked at him, raising an optic ridge. The jet chuckled. “Yeah, that sounds like the politically correct answer, doesn’t it? And I just got done telling you how no ‘Con does something for free. It’s true, I swear. Wings and spark.”

“Very well, but what is your other reason?”

“Heard a few things here, know a few things from the ‘Cons. With all the refugee camps filling up, there’s a good chance Thundercracker, Skywarp and me will be separated. We’ll have the triad connection for reassurance, but still… Don’t want that to happen if we can help it.”

“Your trinemates are amenable to this decision?”

“They’re the ones who brought it up with me.”

The Autobot regarded him, considering his request. “… I’ll bring it up with Sentinel. We’ll have to see what he says. You’re young, but we do need fliers in the Autobots.”

“Thank you, Prowl.”

= = =

“Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker, how can I help you?”

“Yeah, you can help us convince ‘Screamer here that us going on the Ark expedition is a good idea.”

“Look. The Autobots have accepted us, for most part, but will they trust three seekers on something this important? And who’s going to stay here? The Prime is going, so’s Prowl, the fragging Second in Charge, and a good portion of High Command. And now you want us, the Air Commander and his trine off planet too?”

“Ultra Magnus and Elita-1 will lead the Autobot forces while we search for energy sources.” Prowl replied, watching the three, optics curious. Starscream responded grudgingly.

“At least you’re not stripping all the working CPUs from Cybertron.”

“Star’, think about it, we could look for-”

He cut his trinemate off abruptly. “Skywarp, this is an important expedition, I can’t just commandeer it for my own wants.”

“Star’, this search would be greatly expedited if we joined. You’re familiar with interstellar exploration and that planet was energy rich, wasn’t it? We could tag two turbofoxes with one shot.” His other trinemate added, tone and engine coaxing. Starscream growled back.

“Stop trying to convince me!”

“Don’t you want to rescue him?! You still hurt. You can’t keep suppressing it forever!”

“We have to try. Please!”

The seeker froze at his trinemates’ outburst, speechless, and Prowl looked at him with an understanding expression, humming in subsonic sympathy as the jet cycled air for a while, looking torn. Finally, he spoke.

“I… Alright.”

Prowl nodded. “In any case, Optimus had asked me to speak to you about joining the mission. From your conversation, I might suppose your trinemates already have a possible location in mind.”

Starscream glanced at his trine, both of them looking back with adamant expressions. He sighed, then turned back to the SIC.

“… Yes. There’s this organic planet…”

I love you! You've posted this just at the right moment - I was waiting at vet and my cat wasn't providing any entertainment, as she was hiding. So it was a perfect distraction when I checked LJ from y phone and found your update.

Pity that this story is over. But your idea that skyborn and flightless were meant to balance each other is WIN!

Balancing each other out eh? Might explain alot =p And I note that Prowl still likes to sneak up on people *will not drow neko!Prowl with a bell. Will NOT*

(*happy dance* I'm finally getting done with the bunnies.)

Eheh, it's not intentional, I think. (It happens a lot to me, I'd wander up and say something and the person gets the crap scared out of them 'cos they didn't realise I was there. I walk rather quietly ^_^;;)

Oooo! So wonderful! I love the explanation you gave for the difference between flightless and skyborn. So who would be the mastermind behind the eradication of the flightless? Shockwave? Soundwave? Megatron doesn't strike me as that observant.

And congrats on another finished story! :D

win! winwinwinwin win!

first: yay! you finished it! *throws confetti and streamers*

second: yay! you finished it! ;) love the bit about how the skyborn and the flightless Seekers are meant to balance each other out--and Screamer's theory about why Praxis was destroyed. i am sorry to see this particular fic end, but i'm sure that the bunny will nibble for a one-shot here and there. ^_^

You're gonna write a sequel, right? If only for Skyfire's rescue 'cause you can't torture Starscream by NOT rescuing him. *feeds bunnies*
Although, his reaction to the skyborn-flightless theory might be interesting.

Skyfire:"So...their meant to balance each other out? Does that mean that the flightless are the skyborn's common sense? Because that would explain a few things..."
Starscream:"HEY! Whats that suppose to mean?"
Skyfire:"...like that incident with xxx and xxx time and..."
Starscream:*face palms* "You do realise I'm suppose to be the respected commander of the aerial troops, right?"

Lovely logic between the skyborn and flightless, and one of the best "why main Seeker trio goes with Autobots" fics.

*claps hands* This is a wonderful ending to this fic. I can't help but think that Skyfire is going to be so happy in this 'verse, as opposed to how emo he gets to be in canon. And the Arialbots are going to be either the picked on little brothers or mother-henned to death when they show up. XD Nicely done.

Again, sorry for not replying lately. RL was being a real pain-in-the-aft to me, again!

Anyways, I liked how this one ended. The theory that the flightless help ground the skyborn was very interesting. I hope you do a one-shot where they find Skyfire, and maybe several one-shots involving the other flight-capable Autobots on Earth. *hinthint*

This is a fascinating 'what-if' type of story. I love all your variations on the Datsun trine idea that I've stumbled across so far, and it's intriguing to see the effects that background could have, or might have had under other circumstances, on the mechs around them. I was interested to see how commanding Thundercracker was here, even though it was Starscream who ultimately pulled the three together as a trine. All three of them were about to make the worse mistake of their lives with poor trinemates, and it's interesting to think how many different points in this story would have changed the eventual outcome (or spawned an equally likely AU) if someone had said or done something different at that precise moment.

All the way through I was wondering if this would ultimately lead into G1, but I think the AU ending was equally satisfying - it showed just how subtle the division between Autobot and Decepticon in the civil war sometimes are (or could be).

Another interesting read! By the way, would you mind if I added you as a 'friend'? I'd like to watch out for more from you and see if any of your hibernating bunnies wake up.

My bunnies like to give me 101 variations on a theme, so I end up with fic using the same basic prompt but taken to sometimes very different ends.

I'm also waiting on my bunnies to wake, so go ahead and friend me :3
