'Verse: G1 Transformers
Rating: PG-13

Prowl sent his agreement over their connection. ~I admit, it does seem a bit more… unbelievable.~
~Unbelievable? If someone was taking odds on this I’d have made enough credits to buy New York! Yes, yes I know. Don’t fuss; I was just illustrating a point.~
The black and white mech suppressed his immediate response to Smokescreen’s comment on the odds, and his trinemate reassured him that he’d truly gotten over that vice, even if he did still go in for a flutter here or there on occasion. Prowl sighed and directed an amused sort of resignation to the other mech. ~Only New York, Smokescreen?~
Smokescreen pinged back with slowly growing humour. ~I did say it was to illustrate a point, so I’m not going to quibble over realism.~
“Ahem. I hate to break up your little trip to lala land, but you’re smiling and staring off into space and it creeps me out.”
Attention drawn back to his immediate surroundings, Prowl sat up straighter, informing Smokescreen of the disruption before speaking out loud to Ratchet. “My apologies. Smokescreen just contacted me with more data on trine bonds.”
“Well? I can’t tap into your bond. Patch me into a comm. already.”
“Of course.”
= = =
//Smokescreen.//
The diversionary mech started at the incoming comm. from his trinemate. Quickly, he replied. //Yeah, Prowl?//
//Ratchet would like to be part of the discussion, I’m patching him in.//
//Certainly. Why didn’t you tell me you were with him so we could include him from the beginning?//
//He was plotting Jazz’s reformatting and I didn’t wish to interrupt.//
//Ah. Smart mech.//
He could sense Prowl’s amusement, even though the mech’s tone was perfectly even and calm.
//Patching him in now.//
//Smokescreen. What did you tell Prowl?//
//Just that the non seekers of a trine would not be able to communicate with each other through the bond. Since we observed ‘Bee and Mirage doing so, if they are forming a trine then we think that there’s more than one seeker amongst our Ops mechs.//
Prowl filled the medic in on the rest of their postulations, then added, //I considered likelihood that all three might have seeker programming.//
Ratchet frowned. //I don’t know about that. Bumblebee is a possibility, if your theories as to his origins are correct, but Mirage’s creators were not seekers.//
As both doorwinged mechs murmured agreement, he sighed, leaning back into his chair. //And, we may have another problem.//
~… What now?~ Smokescreen grinned at the weary petulance he felt coming from his black and white trinemate, and reached through the bond in sympathy. Ratchet, unknowing of the Datsuns’ private communiqué, continued with his explanation.
//I’m not surprised this hasn’t come up earlier. We don’t go digging around our bots’ CPUs for slag and giggles. But if ‘Bee is seekerkin, then he’s been in a wingless frame all his life. And it’s likely that Jazz grounded himself without obtaining the programming modifications to adapt him to a flightless frame. Idiot.//
~Frag, that mech’s gonna be so toast once Ratch’ gets done with him.~ Prowl hid his smile at Smokescreen’s prediction as Ratchet growled at the absent saboteur.
// But they’re both going to need help with their processors. In ‘Bee’s case, he was placed in a non-seeker frame as a sparkling.// The medic shifted over to his console, pulling up the yellow scout’s records.
//His development was slower than normal, probably because his processors were occupied with rewriting parts of his programming to adjust to the frame. I can’t say how effective those adaptations have been, they were certainly good enough for him to have survived this long, but the proper protocols should still make things easier. And Jazz. I don’t know what the mech was thinking, abandoning his wings without getting hold of the necessary subroutines.//
//So, you’re going to have to scan them both.//
//Yes. Ops mechs or no, if they're seekerkin, they need this. And I can verify if Bumblebee is one of you.//
//What about Mirage?//
//… I don’t know. I’ve never heard of non-seekers being part of a trine before. Perhaps I should take a look to see that the link is not causing him any problems. At this stage, they can still break it with very little backlash.//
Prowl (and Smokescreen, off in his office) flinched, and Ratchet sighed. //I know you seekerkin don’t like the thought of breaking trinebonds, but we don’t know how this will affect Mirage. If it’s negatively, then all three are better off without it.//
Reluctantly, both tacticians acquiesced, Prowl answering for the two of them. //… Very well.//
= = =
“I can’t believe you!” Ignoring the other Ops mech’s restraining hand on his arm, Bumblebee broke free and paced about the small room, refusing to look at the Porsche who was watching him with a weary look on his faceplates. Finally, he stopped, glaring at the visored mech.
“After everything you said about us being a team, about trust between Ops mechs being of utmost importance, you pull this?”
Jazz lowered his head, mutely accepting the scout’s outburst as the third member of their party reached out to rest a hand on the yellow mech’s arm once more. “As hurt as I am by this revelation, he did have his reasons, and we never really asked him about his life before the Autobots.”
“Because we trusted him! He hid this from everyone, including his Ops team. He should have known that we, out of all the mechs in the Ark, would have accepted his past without question. But he didn’t say anything because he. Doesn’t. Trust. Us.”
“The weight of the past can affect you like nothing else. He was never obligated to reveal everything about his background to anyone, us included. However, I beg to differ with you on the matter of trust. He trusts us absolutely. You are upset and emotional; so you refuse to see it.”
Bumblebee snorted. “Yeah, right. How can you still believe that?”
Mirage just eyed both saboteur and scout briefly, arms folded across his torso, before speaking in a quiet, thoughtful manner. “Then consider this. After the actions of his previous trinemate, I wouldn’t have expected him to ever allow anyone that close to him again. Yet, unconsciously, he’s initiated precisely such a bond with you and I.”
Bumblebee went completely still as Mirage directed a penetrating look at their superior, optics meeting a suddenly brightening visor. “And that, Bumblebee, tells me more than anything he could ever just say.”

Date: 2009-03-05 05:38 pm (UTC)No breaking the bond, Ratchet. That'd be mean.
Though the idea of Bee being a seeker originally just makes the doorwings in the 07 movie so much more appropriate.

Date: 2009-03-05 05:59 pm (UTC)Its to great to see that this story is coming along quite nicely! :)
I seriously hope that there won't be any bonds breaking in the Ops mechs. That would be way too cruel. D=
Thanks for updating with another part of your fic! Update again soon! =D

Date: 2009-03-06 11:36 pm (UTC)I liked how Prowl and Smokescreen had their private little comments to each other while comm'-ing with Ratchet. And 'Raj pointing out to Bee why Jazz kept his secret from them for so long, but just started to trust them enough to (subconsciously) start forming a trinebond with them is really great.
Can't wait 'til we get to Bee and 'Raj's histories.

This is such a great story, I really like what you're doing with all the details about grounded Seekers and trine bonds and such. It's wonderful to read.
