I'd make some comment about symbolism and chapter number, but coincidental coincidence is just that, a coincidence.

Edit: I has a Prowler. He has Japanese packaging that I don't understand a word of and the numbers (and letter) C-08 on the packaging. I have yet to get him out of the plastic, but the bitty! Jazz and Optimus (2007 movie mechs, Legends class) have spotted him.

I think Prowl wants to stay in the packaging. I don't blame him. The bitty!mechs are kinda enthusiastic.

Title: Hunter Green (Part 13)
'Verse: G1 Transformers
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Same as before

“Why are you doing this?”

The mech he was clinging to made no audible reply. ::Youngling: No place in war.::

Mirage didn’t respond to that, and Soundwave flew on, bearing his invisible passenger to the Decepticons’ underwater base. Skywarp had ‘ported back with the offline chassis of Hunter. Or Prowl. Astrotrain had shot ahead as well, eager to deal with the tactician once again. The spy shivered, tightening his grip carefully as he remembered the condition he’d found the black and white mech in the last time. A thought occurred, and he spoke again.

“Soundwave, do you know who’s in control now?”

::Negative. Both minds: equally unaware when offline.”

“How about before he offlined?”

There was a long pause, and he could feel them start to move faster. ::The youngling.::

========================================

He onlined in a familiar cell, in a familiar situation. Limbs shackled together, leaving him unable to move with any sort of grace or speed, lying on the ground in a careless heap, frame aching all over. Yet, he wasn’t hurting too badly, Astrotrain must have gotten bored with an offline victim, and left off doing more damage until he could get a hold of an online Prowl.

Even the presence of the mech standing beyond the bars was familiar.

“Well then, Autobot. You left too soon before, were the accommodations not to your liking? Here’s hoping you stay a little longer this time.” Astrotrain leered down at him, malicious glee written all over his faceplates. Prowl slowly rose to his feet. He would not give this mech the satisfaction of seeing him in such a degrading position.

“Why should I? You haven’t improved them any.”

The larger mech laughed. “Well, learn to like it. You’re going to be here for a long while yet.”

Astrotrain left, and Prowl leant back against the wall, wincing as already tender doorwings made contact with the hard surface. Looking down at himself, he noted the energon spattered across his front. Strange, his systems check reported no sign of a leak.

S’from Astrotrain.

Prowl stiffened at the sudden intrusion, before realising who it had to be. He thought back cautiously. ‘Hunter?’

Yes sir.

‘Ah. Astrotrain’s energon? I did notice his neck cables were damaged.’

We have no weapons. But we do have doors and a chevron. He forgot to pay attention. There was a faint flicker of humour, and Prowl had to smile in response.

Ironic. I wished to meet you properly only a few days ago. Hunter’s mind voice was quiet, but Prowl could sense the barely held back terror the younger mind sharing his frame was unable to hide from him, and responded to it with a pulse of reassurance. The other’s thoughts calmed somewhat, and Prowl ‘spoke’ to Hunter again to distract him.

‘And we finally do so. A pity it had to occur under such circumstances.’

In… Indeed.

‘Thank you for bringing me back to my friends.’ A curl of gratitude wrapped around that portion he sensed was his companion.

I’m also responsible for our current predicament. I turned us over to the Decepticons. Self recrimination washed over the both of them, and the tactician tried to comfort the youngling again.

‘No doubt you had reason to.’ Prowl was picking up memory data now, Hunter was unconsciously replaying the scene over and over, and the SIC could see why the youngling had done what he did. ‘They were going to terminate Bluestreak. I would have done the same.’

Before they could converse any more, Starscream stopped outside their cell and peered through the bars, scrutinising the mech within.

“Huh. It’s you.”

Prowl made no answer. Silently, the jet shut off the energy bars of the cell, then pointed a null ray at the black and white mech’s head and jerked a thumb in the direction of the exit. “Move.”

========================================

“Welcome back, Prowl.”

Megatron smiled at the steely expression that faced him. “Astrotrain, Soundwave, make our guest comfortable.”

The triple changer wrestled Prowl into more restraints, this time remembering to avoid coming too close to the tactician’s doorwings, and Soundwave activated the magnetic clamps to immobilise him. Throughout all this, the black and white mech kept trying to fight back, bringing every inch of movement he could muster into play.

“I should have expected you to resurface. But I’ve learnt my lesson; you won’t have another chance to do so.”

Prowl’s reply was even and resolute. “It doesn’t matter what blocks you put up. I’ll find a way to break free.”

“Ah. I don’t plan to block you.” The Decepticon commander smirked at the bound and helpless mech, tapping Prowl’s faceplates with a datajack. “There is a virus sitting in your processor, a lovely piece of work by Shockwave. He used it quite often early in the war to generate empty shells for his reprogramming experiments. It’s just waiting for you to be connected to our mainframe. You are going to be expunged from your CPU, transferred and held there, and the A.I. will take over your body. You can’t break free if you’re not there.”

He laughed as the mech continued to try to escape his restraints, taunting him further. “I could delete you then. But keeping your mind around has a certain, appeal. Uploaded it to a drone, you’ll see everything your chassis does, all the victories it will give us, and be unable to do anything about it.”

Megatron stood before the tactician, musing almost to himself. “Pity, you probably won’t care too much, but keeping you sapient is too great a risk, as you’ve clearly shown, thus, the symbolic gesture will have to do.”

“What makes you think the A.I. will be any more cooperative than I am?” Prowl spat out, trying to buy some more time.

“Simple. I offer it security. It joins me, and it never has to be concerned about being deleted. Besides, you must be restraining it, and the downtrodden are always eager to overthrow their oppressors.”

“And you think we wouldn’t have deleted it?”

“You were not at any of the recent battles, meaning you must still carry it, making you a security risk. Besides, you Autobots are sentimental fools. No doubt your fellows thought our little A.I. was more than just sophisticated coding. But even if you have, no matter. The process works; we can always input a new one. Now Autobot, say farewell to your CPU.”

Megatron jammed in the cable connecting his prisoner to the Decepticon mainframe, and laughed while the black and white mech twisted in his bonds, trying to resist the program tearing into his processors without mercy. The laughter grew louder as the mech then jerked his head back, frame arching, and screamed.

========================================

Their body was in no great distress, but as the program sank deeper into their shared CPU, violating their very minds, both fought with all they had to keep it out. Who had the thought first, neither could tell, but Prowl immediately denied Hunter’s attempt to carry it out.

‘No!’

The program wants a mind. It can’t tell me from you, and Megatron does not know what I am.

‘I cannot let you do this!’ The tactician insisted.

Why not?! The Autobots need you! Hunter’s ‘voice’ was as furious as Prowl’s.

‘I will not let a youngling die in my place.’

So you would condemn the rest of your mechs so I’d live for however long your sacrifice buys me? Prowl, you’re the strategist, that is not a logical course of action.’ The youngling’s vehement reply was overridden sternly by the other mech.

‘Of course that isn’t. But we can both get out alive. Mirage is here, I felt him undoing our bonds. We just need to fight this off.’

He cannot take on all the Decepticons and we’re still connected to their mainframe. Disconnecting abruptly might incapacitate us. If I let the program get me, I can take the mainframe over and turn it on the ‘Cons. Shouldn’t be too different from what I’ve done before. Memory data of controlling a linked chassis flashed at Prowl.

‘You have no guarantee that your mind will make the transition undamaged.’

I’ll risk it. Damaged is better than dead. I can come back as long as you’re still connected, and as soon as the ‘Cons are downed, I will.

‘The answer is still no. Not when I can do the same.’

There was a pause, and Prowl sensed that the youngling was gathering his nerve. I’m not letting you stop me.

‘Hunter, no!’ They fought each other then, briefly, before he caught the hint of an apology.

‘What-’

It was an accident. Sorry. Came the whisper in his head, before Hunter’s next words stunned him long enough for the younger mind to dart away.

Jazz knows.

The words echoed in his processors as he hurtled after Hunter, following him into the grip of the virus. Then, all was screaming, as one mind was ripped from their CPU, and the other gave voice to their pain.

========================================

Mirage shuddered at the sound. Soundwave had told him to fall back when Megatron jacked the cable into the black and white’s chassis, before he could get all of the shackles. Interfering with the process could destroy one of the minds inhabiting Prowl’s CPU. So the spy stood helplessly in a dark corner, hating himself with every fresh cry the virus wrung from the mech before him. He’d failed once again.

The only thing he currently loathed more than himself was the triplechanger leaning against the wall, savouring every tortured sound the doorwinged mech made.

Then the mech fell silent, limping against the bonds that held him upright, and the sudden lack of sound startled Mirage. From the console where he was monitoring the process, Soundwave quietly intoned that the transfer was complete.

Then, the lights flickered, and went out.

::Free him. Quickly. Leave the cuffs in place.::

Mirage did so, while Megatron barked orders for the problem to be fixed. Reports that nothing they did was working started coming in, as red emergency lights flickered into being, casting the room into a menacing light. The Decepticon commander stalked forward to snarl at his communications officer.

“What the frag is going on?!”

Then, from Prowl’s chassis, unexpectedly, came a laugh, rough from the screaming, causing the Decepticon leader to whirl ‘round and jab a finger into the black and white mech’s face.

“What did you do?!”

The mech’s head lifted, optics gleaming, and Megatron stepped back as Mirage’s spark skipped a pulse in shock. Prowl looked out of those optics. A disconnected voice sounded from one of the consoles in the room.

He didn’t do anything.”

“No! Starscream! What manner of glitch did you create? Soundwave! What happened to the safeguards you assured me were up?!” Not waiting for a response the gunmetal mech slammed a fist onto one of the consoles. “You! You faulty piece of coding! You obey me!”

A mocking laugh answered him, as alarms started to go off, warning about pressure failures. Even the emergency lighting started to flicker. Mirage activated his night vision and watched as Prowl slipped his restraints, and swung a fist directly into the Decepticon’s faceplaces. “I did say I would find a way to break free. No matter what you program into my CPU, even if you remove my mind, as long as my spark exists it will never serve you!”

Megatron staggered back, clutching his cracked optic, then growled. “Then I’ll just get rid of that as well! But first, since I have no use for the glitch any longer…” A command was input into the nearest console, one that triggered the deletion of the transferred mind.

The resulting shriek, abruptly cut off, would echo in all their processors for a long while to come.

Prowl shouted a denial, lunging forward to stop the mech. Megatron grabbed the cable still linking the tactician to the mainframe and tore it in two. The sudden loss of the connection caused the Autobot SIC to drop to his knees, processors scrambling to recover. More alarms sounded, declaring that pressure failures were increasing rapidly, and the Decepticon commander turned to Soundwave to demand an explanation.

“A.I. entity: Overrode integrity management systems. Loss of entity: Loss of systems.”

“Fix it then!”

“Affirmative, Lord Megatron.”

As the tapedeck worked to regain control, all the lights shut off, leaving only the faint glow of Soundwave’s console monitor. In the chaos, Mirage snuck forward, prompted by the telepath, still invisible, pulling Prowl up and yanking the unresponsive mech out of the room.

“Going somewhere?” Astrotrain. Frag. He’d forgotten about the slagger. As Mirage placed himself between the triplechanger and Prowl, the large mech smirked, then charged forward to attack the tactician. Before the spy could draw his weapon and fire, blowing his cover, Astrotrain dropped to the floor, offline. Behind the mech’s bulk, Mirage spotted Thundercracker, wielding a blaster and a grim look.

The seeker gestured wordlessly at a doorway, and Mirage, scarcely believing what was happening but deciding to trust the ‘Cons once more, pushed his friend through it. The row of escape pods was a welcoming sight, and soon both Autobots were out of the Decepticon’s base and headed for shore, and the Ark.

S'alright. I don't really listen to what the bunnies say anymore. What they say and what they make happen tend to diverge rather often.

You delight in these cliffies, don't you? You must. HUNTER!!!!

Love TC and Soundwave doing their best to get both Hunter and Prowl out of there without damage. Too bad it didn't work. Slag it to the pit and back.

I most sincerely hope you're still typing. You've left us in an unacceptable state of affairs.
